Lip Liner
A defined border that sharpens shape without filling the lip.
What it is
Lip liner redraws and strengthens the lip border alone, without adding colour across the body of the lip. It corrects asymmetry, restores a border that has softened with age, and gives a cleaner edge for lipstick to sit against. It is the more conservative lip option and pairs naturally with lip blush if you later decide you want colour as well.
Is it right for you?
A good fit if
- A lip border that has faded or blurred
- Slight asymmetry between the two sides
- You want definition but not colour across the lip
- You want to start conservatively before committing to full blush
Not right if
- You want overall colour and evenness — lip blush is the right treatment
- Active cold sores
- Lip filler within 4 weeks either side
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding
Your skin, specifically
- Skin tone
- Natural lip tone matters more here than skin tone. Deeper or heavily pigmented lips — common on Fitzpatrick IV–VI — carry cool blue, purple or grey undertones that will pull any pigment placed over them toward those tones. The fix is neutralising first with a warm corrective base, then building colour in a second pass, which is why deeper lips genuinely need two sessions to look even. Promising an even result on pigmented lips in one appointment is not realistic, and we will not do it.
- Skin type
- Dry, chapped or peeling lips will not hold pigment evenly, so the week of daily exfoliating and moisturising beforehand is not optional — it is the single biggest factor in how your result heals. Smokers and anyone who habitually licks their lips should expect faster fading.
- Age & skin maturity
- Younger lips hold colour strongly and evenly. Mature lips lose definition at the border and develop fine vertical lines, which is exactly what this treatment addresses well — though pigment can travel slightly along those lines, so we work more conservatively and expect a softer result.
Before & after care
Before your appointment
- If you are prone to cold sores, ask your doctor about antiviral cover before your appointment — the procedure can trigger an outbreak.
- Exfoliate and moisturise your lips daily for the week before so the surface is smooth.
- Skip alcohol and caffeine for 24 hours.
- Avoid sun exposure and tanning for 2 weeks.
- No lip fillers within 4 weeks either side of the appointment.
Aftercare
- Keep lips lightly balmed at all times for the first 10 days — dry lips crack and lose pigment.
- Drink through a straw for the first few days and avoid salty, spicy or acidic food.
- Do not pick or bite the flaking.
- Expect the colour to look intense for 3–5 days, then flake and appear to disappear almost entirely around day 7. It comes back as the skin settles — do not panic at the halfway point.
- No kissing, swimming or sauna for 10 days.
Common questions
Can I add lip blush later?
Yes, and many clients do exactly that — liner first, then blush at a later appointment once they are comfortable with the shape.
Will there be a visible outline?
Not if it is done properly. The border is softened inward so it reads as a natural edge, not a drawn ring.
Can it correct uneven lips?
Within reason. Minor asymmetry can be visually rebalanced. Significant differences in volume need filler rather than pigment.
